Hemoglobin the iron rich protein found in red blood cells is responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. It is the reason that blood is in red color. Its main function is to transport oxygen from the lungs to the body tissues, so that living cells can perform their duties properly. Hemoglobin also helps carry carbon dioxide away from the cells and transport it back to the lungs.
